HOW TO CONDUCT A JOB INTERVIEW FOR YOUR COMPANY?
You have decided to hire one or more employees due to business growth or staff turnover. Before sending out job postings, it is important to be prepared for the interview process. Interviewing potential candidates can be stressful for both you and the person being interviewed. With careful planning you can ease some of the concerns by having a clear job description, well-prepared questions and potential answers. You also need to decide what type of interview you would like to hold.
Other than a standard interview in which you ask a series of questions, there are a variety of methods that can help you determine if a candidate is suitable for the job. The following interview components could help you reach a decision or fine-tune your search:
- WORK SAMPLES:— Have the candidates do actual tasks (or a simulation) that they may perform on a daily basis in the position you are trying to fill. You could also request that the candidates provide work samples from some of their previous positions.
- WRITTEN TESTS:— When the position requires writing skills, you could request that the candidates write a blog post, email or letter to have them demonstrate their writing and editing skills.
- BASKET EXERCISES: — Prepare a tray of items requiring the candidates to organize and prioritize tasks such as client requests, reports, messages, etc. They could then prepare responses or make decisions based on the information provided to them.
- ORAL PRESENTATIONS: — If the position requires public speaking, sales or frequent contact with customers, you may want to assess communication skills by having the candidate prepare and deliver a short presentation.
- APTITUDE TESTS: — There are different types of tests that could be given to determine a candidate's reasoning, analytical or numerical skills depending on the type of position being offered.
You can find many examples of interview techniques or questions by searching the Internet or you may want to hire a HR company to develop customized tools and tests to help you find the best candidate(s) for your business.
